The 5-Year Roof Care Program

Treat at year five, not year twenty. A simple maintenance rhythm for asphalt roofs — inspect, clean, treat, record — plus a free reminder so your roof's year five never slips past.

The idea: a roof is a maintained asset, not a disposable one

We maintain furnaces, reseal driveways and change oil on a schedule — then let the single most expensive surface on the house bake unattended for 20 years and act surprised at the replacement bill. The 5-Year Roof Care Program is the alternative rhythm:

Roof ageThe visit
Year 0–4Nothing but a yearly look: gutters (granule check), flashing, vents.
Year 5First treatment. Inspect, clean, spray. The roof still has nearly all its granules — the goal is to keep them and keep the shingles flexible.
Year 10Second treatment. Same visit, same checklist, photos compared against year 5.
Year 15Third treatment, with an honest candidacy re-check — this is where prevention hands over to planning for eventual replacement, on your schedule instead of the roof's.

Why start at five, when the roof looks fine? Because the two things treatment protects — oil content and granule adhesion — are at their highest then. Every maker in this category will happily spray a 18-year-old roof for you. The prevention-first position of this site is that the best money is spent while there is still something to preserve. The evidence, including its limits, is on our evidence page.

Get the year-5 reminder

The entire program fails if year five slips by unnoticed — so we keep the calendar for you. Tell us when your roof was installed (or last treated) and we'll email you when its treatment window opens. No spam, no selling your address; the list is the program.

Phase 1 honesty: this site's reminders are sent personally from our mailbox (contact.malvyn@gmail.com) — pressing the button opens your email app with the details filled in. One reminder per cycle; unsubscribe by replying "stop" to any reminder.

For the record: this reminder list is the same idea we'll one day offer roofers as a service — a book of roofs and their due dates. Homeowners on the program are never shared with any roofer without asking first. Ever.
